During the excavation process, Altman realizes that, while it drives others to commit murder and suicide, the Marker's power does not affect him. While investigating a gravitational signal, Altman finds the Black Marker in a crater near the town of Chicxulub. This obelisk-like object causes people to hallucinate and - as revealed later - has the power to reanimate the living corpses that "Dead Space" calls Necromorphs.
